Hey guys, it's Scott.
It is Friday, March 7th, and I wanted to do just a very quick lightning fast post announcing that we're going to have a class next week! I'm really excited, we'll be doing a Comic Writing 101 (I guess it's 103 by this point because we're in our third or fourth year, really, of our class) Wednesday night, 9:30pm EST. The subject will be telling a personal story in comics across the medium. It's a subject that's really close to my heart. It's something I've been thinking about for a while. I think it's actually going to be one of the key lessons that we address in the entire time we've been doing this class.
And so what do I mean by that? What I mean is this class is all about teaching you how to tell a story that matters to you, whether you're working in big, epic, bombastic, licensed stuff like superheroes, or you're doing creator-owned where it’s something more intimate and raw and you have more control over it. It’s about how to always prioritize the things that matter to you regardless of if it’s a restrictive form like superheroes or you have total free form like creator-owned. So we'll be looking at books from certain slices of time in a creator's career. We'll post them on Monday and have a Dropbox where you can read the works that we're talking about. But what I want to do is almost look at one year in a creator's trajectory where they've done a book in a really big scale, like a big superhero book and a creator-owned or indie book, and look at the ways that those books sort of address the same subject matter in two very different ways. So the goal of the class really is to show you that whatever area of the medium you're working in, whether it's licensed, whether it's creator-owned, you can tell a story that matters to you.
Again, I'm really excited about it. Can't wait for you to see it. I'll do a much longer post on Monday about something you guys have been asking about for a while, why I think the Ultimate line over at Marvel and the Absolute line at DC have had the success that they've had over the last six months.
And I am very excited about it. I've been thinking about it a lot, talking to retailers. And I just want to do a post about it and some of the stuff we have coming up at Best Jackett. Really, really excited. So yeah, everyone come by Wednesday night. We'll have a blast. And yeah, look for another post reminding you and with all the material we'll look at in class on Monday. Have a great weekend, you guys!
