Newsletter #212: Pitying the Fool

Back with Fan Expo Dallas memories and a look at current/pending releases!
5

Hey guys, it's Scott.

It is Tuesday, June 3rd (but you’ll be hearing this on Wednesday, June 4th), and I'm back from Fan Expo Dallas. It was a great, great trip. I got to hang out with brother Greg Capullo for the whole weekend.

We always go out to dinner just like, us and his wonderful wife, Jamie, when we're away. Sometimes with Jon Glapion, too, when he's there, who inked a ton of the Batman run we did together, and he's also a dear friend. And it was great, man. We went out to a steakhouse that Jamie found and tried all kinds of beef. I wanted to go find a place with a mechanical bull, but none of us were adventurous enough. And they told me that you had to drive all the way to San Antonio for those, so I gave up.

But the fans were fantastic. The con was huge. It was way bigger than I thought.

Speaking of BIGGER…

I got to meet Mr. T, which was unbelievable. He was so inspiring. I was walking by his panel as I was going to the men's room and he was up there and I heard him, I heard that voice. And I was like, behind the curtain of the stage he was on And he's like, “you know what makes you tough? Fighting doesn't make you tough. Having big muscles doesn't make you tough. Loving your kids makes you tough! Holding the door for your lady makes you tough!” It was awesome. I was like, “I love you, Mr. T!!”

And then I got to meet Priscilla Presley. As a huge Elvis fan. I can't tell you what a thrill that was. I like saw her walking in the lobby and I made the worst opening line ever where I was like, “I'm not a crazy fan, but…” which clearly alerts you to the fact that I am a crazy fan if you're her. But she was very sweet and it was a big thrill.

Ty had just watched The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear that same day, so this freaked him out

I got to see Charles Soule and Phil Kennedy Johnson and it was a blast. And above all, the fans were great. It was busy, but kind of exhausting—

What, honey? Get you one thing to eat? Sure. What do you want? Popcorners? Okay, I'll be right back.

Alright, back with Popcorners. And I wanted to make a quick post today about a few things—

Markers? Sure.

But I wanted to make a quick post today about a couple things. First and foremost, today marks the return of this series that's really special to me—By a Thread.

By a Thread: Book Two #1 | Cover by Valeria Favoccia

It's co-created with the incredible Valeria Favoccia, one of, I think, the most talented rising stars in comics, and my son, who also is one of the most talented rising stars. In comics, in my opinion, Jack Snyder. So it's a comic built from his imagination, his idea that we've gotten to work on together as a team. And it's been a real joy and to watch these two young creators just kick ass on it is a thrill and inspiring and I love the series dearly. So this week is the beginning of our second arc. Our first arc is fully finished and collected now by Dark Horse. It came out digitally from Comixology.

By a Thread: Book One | Cover by Valeria Favoccia

And now the second arc is beginning this week from Comixology digitally and eventually will be collected as well by Dark Horse. But I hope you'll check it out. We're really, really proud of it. The premise of the book is that not long from now, a strange substance bubbles out of the center of the earth, this carbon-based toxic stuff that people call ‘the shroud.’ And it kills everything it touches, transmutes things into kind of monstrous, nebulous versions of themselves and it starts covering the earth and so this takes place in a future where people live on these towers called ‘needles’ where they they're desperate not to fall into this stuff and it's an epic adventure where these kids set out from one of these needles looking for some safe place that might have emerged from the shroud someplace they can live like not hanging by a thread, so I hope you'll check it out. Again, we're really proud of it. It's out right now.

By a Thread: Book Two #1 | Art by Valeria Favoccia and Whitney Cogar; Letters by Tom Napolitano

A couple other things—Absolute Batman is out next week. I think on May 11th. This is the beginning of our giant Bane arc. Really, really excited about it. It's Nick Dragotta and me.

Absolute Batman #9 | Covers by Nick Dragotta, Gerardo Zaffino, Tirso Cons, Dustin Nguyen & Dan Hipp

Absolute Batman #4, the standalone origin issue from me, Gabriel Walta & Frank Martin is also getting a new printing that same day!

Absolute Batman #4 | Third printing cover by Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin

Also, shameless, shameless ask, but Absolute Batman is nominated for Best New Series at the Eisners. Voting ends on Thursday, so you only have a day or two left. If you are still voting and you'd be kind enough to vote for us for Best New Series, it would mean a lot to all of us. We're really proud of the book. And also Nick Dragotta is nominated for Best Penciler/Inker separately. And so is our letterer, Clayton Cowles. So I really hope you'll vote for our team for Best New Series and also vote for them individually.

But also, I'm doing a couple of signings next week to celebrate the release of Absolute Batman #9. I'm doing one on Wednesday down at Third Eye Comics in Maryland, one of my favorite stores.

And then I'm doing one on Thursday back home in New York City at Midtown Comics Grand Central. So I hope you'll check it out!

Anyway, I think that's all the housekeeping. We're getting ready for a graduation party that means a lot to us on Sunday for our 18 year-old. So, I'm doing all the great stuff that I'm terrible at around the house. I grew up in the city, so it's like, you call the super for everything. I'm not used to building stuff and all this kind of thing. A lot of errands. But anyway, I hope you and yours are well. And thanks again for a great week. See you soon!
