Newsletter #203: Mark Waid's Comic Writing 101

Join us this Thursday at 9:30pm EST for a live class taught by me and comic book legend Mark Waid!

Hey guys, it's Scott.

It is Monday, February 10th and forgive my voice. I'm not sick anymore, I was just down in Orlando for MegaCon and I did a ton of talking all weekend. So I am home, I am healthy in the deep, deep snow of New York. But I wanted to do a really quick post and just mention two big things we have going on this week. First, Absolute Batman #5 comes out Wednesday.

Absolute Batman #5 (2025) | Covers by Nick Dragotta, Joëlle Jones, Ian Bertram & The Mann Boyz

Everybody on the team is super excited about this one. It's back to the regular team—Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin on colors, and Clayton Cowles on letters. It picks up where #3 left off, all the action, all the brutality. And it's got one of my favorite moments that I've ever been a part of in comics. So it's a moment that really symbolizes everything the series is about and my favorite kind of stuff that happens in comics. I can't wait for you to see it.

And the other thing that I wanted to mention is that we are going to be doing a class this week! I'm so, so thrilled. Thursday night at our regular time, 9.30 p.m. Eastern. And we have an unbelievable guest, a true comic book legend, somebody I'm really proud to call both a mentor and a friend, the great Mark Waid.

And so when I was talking to Mark about what he wanted to come on and teach, we could have done anything. He's been a part of every kind of comic from small indie series to some of the most legendary superhero epics that you've ever read, like Kingdom Come. And what he wanted to do, which I think was so smart and also such a nice thing to do, was to do a class about staying in comics. I do classes about aspects of breaking into comics a lot and classes directly about breaking into comics. There's so many YouTube things and advice online and everything and panels about breaking into comics that's great advice, but we wanted to do something that was about staying in comics. Essentially, how do you create a sustainability and a long career? How do you weather storms? How do you weather big success and sometimes missing the mark? How do you create longevity? And so I thought it was such an interesting topic. We have tons of stories that we can tell and I can't wait for you to see.

So Thursday night, 9.30pm EST. We'll do it live. It is going to be paid. This is our first paid class in a while. So what you do to sign up for it is you subscribe to our Best Jackett tier at $7/month (or $75/year). You can sign up now, pay seven bucks, cancel at the end of the week (if you want), and during the time that you have that $7 subscription you can look at all of our 30+ classes. We have an archive on YouTube where we have classes on everything from creating a compelling character to villains to dialogue to all kinds of stuff with many, many guest stars from James Tynion, Donny Cates, Greg Capullo, all kinds of comic superstars and up-and-comers. So, yeah. I hope you'll do it. I hope you'll check it out. We love doing the free classes, but we also need to do these to keep the whole infrastructure of Best Jackett running. And also with the $7 subscription, very soon you get your chance to send two books to me of any kind to get signed. We're going to do that now that I'm back and settled after the new year and MegaCon. So we'll have details about that very, very soon. It also allows you to skip the line at conventions, or at least come up in the first 15-20 minutes of any signing that I do, and get your stuff signed before the line actually starts. At some of these cons like MegaCon, that can save you a few hours wait. But above all it just gives you access to being a part of Best Jackett in a bigger and more comprehensive way. I hope you’ll sign up! Ty, the best assistant in the world, will put the link in here.

And I also just wanted to say thank you for MegaCon. It was unbelievable. That con is so much bigger than it was pre-COVID. It's just mind-blowing. I mean, the attendance is actually the same, if not bigger than San Diego, which is nuts. And all weekend, it was just cosplay and celebrations of everything geek. And so many of you came up and talked to me and Greg about the work that we had done and then talked to me about Absolute Batman and indie stuff and all of it, it was just an unbelievably cool weekend. I really, really appreciate it.

Greg and I have the Absolute best fans

And I had so many friends down there too that I was excited to see. I got to hang out with James Tynion.

Hanging with brother James Tynion IV, Rob Levin, Jorge Jimenez, Lee Garbett, Pepe C & Cammo!

I got to hang out with Greg. We always escape when we're at a con together and go out to dinner, just the two of us. I got to hang out with Jock and catch up and have late nights with him. I got to see Jorge Jimenez and Cammo and Donny Cates. And just one after another, it was just a real blast. Charles Soule, I even got to see for a minute.

Late night with Jock and Donny

So it was a ton of fun and I can't thank you guys enough for a wonderful convention. So again, this week, Absolute Batman Wednesday and then Thursday night, we're going to be doing a class. So we'll do reminders. But again, I hope you'll sign up for Best Jacket at the $7/month (or $75/year) tier and come hang out with us, man. It'll be fun!
