Hey Scott. First of all happy New Year! I never thought we’d have a platform like this where we could interact directly
With you. Wondering if you think the class would work for someone like me… I’m not looking to write comics but
I’ve been doing stand up comedy open mics. Your comments on creativity get to me. And don’t get me wrong… I’ve read thousands of comics in my life and read them daily, it just feels daunting to think of writing one, and I like comedy. Thanks!
Your words meant a lot right now Scott, next year is the year I am going to try to get published and create more and find out if my ideas and execution are worth anything. A dream born out of the madness of 2021. Wish me luck and happy new year everyone!
I hope we can have a class focused on building up your own indie Comic IP from scratch.
I LOVE what's being made right now but I also feel like too many indie comics are just remixes of nerdy genre films from the 1980s.
I think James Tynion IV was onto something when he said that we need to "create iconic characters that fans want to draw in their notebooks, dress up as, and daydream about."
I felt that Arcane recently hit the mark for me in terms of having characters that were visually appealing, emotionally compelling, and exploring ideas, music, and Art that feel cutting-edge in the same way The Matrix did when it first came out.
I feel with movies like Matrix, Star Wars, Indiana Jones... these are cash grabs only. I've been pretty upset with what Disney has done with Star Wars (my all time favorite everything). Feels they are watering so much down. Lets bring back dead characters like in comic book stories now (Darth Maul, Bobba and the Emperor) if feels blah. No new energy for me. However, the comic book movie reboots/sequels this feels natural and maybe its because I've read comics so long. Different artist and writers come and go. Storylines from the solo books to their group books (Batman to JLA) never really tie in and are always so different so for me that works.

We respect the past by moving forward.
Start small and dream big everyone!
