Dang! I loved this "issue." Lots of great lessons, especially from your teacher.

I'm a small town concert promoter. It's happy hour music country. There are so many Captain & Tennille style acts here and I'm a recovering punk rock kid. so much of my job is anticipating what people are going to show up for, and also currating shows that mean something for me. The shows i do for me, the original artists not playing shitty covers...do not bring as many people, but I'm working to build that culture. It's slowly working, but God damn my forehead hurts from constantly banging it against the walls. I've been thinking hard about calling it quits.

So your quote about doing it for yourself hits me in the right place today. It reminds me I'm doing the Right things and people will catch on. Thank you for these lessons. I still carry these with me.

Also, Fucking love CANARY so far! Can't wait to finish it!!

The stuff that Bruno Redondo has been doing with Tom Taylor in Nightwing has been pretty special. I'd love to see a breakdown of that.

Thanks for sharing your concert story; relationship to audience, passion for getting them to feel what you as a writer feel in order to connect with them on a deep emotional level that inspires them or makes them think about their own experiences or the world in a different way…you said it in a nutshell.

For action scenes, I would love to know how you pick what action scenes to show? Is it conflict between two people that has built up; is it a separate scene that involves the two people in some way to show the audience something about one or both characters? Thanks!

That story about you calling your teach is so wholesome! Very relatable to get upset about not making that connection to your audience the way you felt you could. I love how her saying you're a writer was almost her way of saying you'll have your whole life to build that connection again. Thanks for sharing that.

An action scene I remember that impressed me recently was the Doomsday vs Superman fight from Superman and Lois. I loved how it mirrored other actions scenes from the show and incorporated the strength of family in the fight itself.

Loved what you said about writing for yourself. Super helpful and great motivation to reconnect to what I’ve been writing recently. Cheers!

Would love to look at some action scenes from a classic like Hellboy, or how it’s used in all-ages books like Bone.

Great post!
