I haven't seen Godzilla Minus 1 yet but what you described made me think of "Logan."

Yeah, I've totally been meaning to catch Godzilla Minus 1 in the theaters, I think I'll enjoy that more than Monarch solely on what I've heard. I know Big G is in it as limited as he is in Monarch, but I love his design better in GM1! Although he is mutating for the next Kong feature but I hear his screen time is limited in it too. Soooo.......

💯 concur. Monarch is great example of this phenomena. Ironically, this barbell is also likely behind the rise of shows like The Masked Singer, Is it Cake?, and cozy mysteries like Midsommer Murders. My wife has basically stopped watching the usual IP (Monarch gets one more episode 😜) as it has become too anxiety provoking and episodes rarely end with a story resolved with a happy ending. Fortunately, the firehose of content out there these days offers options for everyone, but I am definitely watching more in my own these days.

More than anything, I've felt this with TMNT. I was a huge TMNT kid. Had a ton of the toys, wore out the VHS tapes I had of the movies, struggled through the weird NES game and watched every repeat of the show I could.

But they never really went away. They'd keep reinventing themselves year after year. A lot of that to sell toys, sure, but they also 'grew up' a little bit as the cartoons got more serious. Then the IDW put on a masterclass of how to treat the turtles seriously while incorporating everything that's silly about it.

Now they've done the opposite - going full-on PG and trying to get a new generation involved. Interesting how it's a 180 from the examples you've mentioned.
