Hey guys, it’s Scott.
It is Wednesday, June 3rd. Forgive whatever weird background noise you hear. I made the classic parent mistake of getting my kid a stuffed animal. I was in Vegas and I got Quinn our seven-year-old a cactus, a stuffed cactus that dances. And I did not realize that it has a record button where it records your voice and then can play it back in all kinds of demented, crazy, distorted ways. So if you hear some spectral, horror, nightmarish, high-pitched voice in the background, that is the toy that I accidentally got and I’m now being tormented with.
Anyway, really quick, I wanted to make a post about a few things. The first thing is a reminder that voting for the Eisners closes in just a couple days on June 5th, this Friday. There’s so many great books to go out and vote for. We’re really proud and honored to see DC and the Absolute line represented so well at the Eisners this year. We’re really grateful to the judges. And I hope you’ll consider voting for Absolute Batman in the categories in which we’re nominated. Mostly I’m just so proud of this team - Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin and Clayton Cowles (now Tom Napolitano) and Katie Kubert, our editor, just everyone involved. Everybody involved in this book gives it 100% and then some and it’s just amazing to see. And they do it under tremendous pressure. I mean, none of us expected the book to take off the way it did. And I watched these guys just grind with such passion and love for the story we’re telling, for you guys, for the stores. They’re just rising to the occasion, everybody. And it’s inspiring for me to see. So I hope you’ll think of them when you vote.
We’re nominated in a few different categories. First is Best Continuing Series. Then Nick is nominated for Best Cover Artist, we’re nominated for Best Single Issue for the Annual, Clayton is nominated for Best Letterer. And I’m nominated for Best Writer, really honored and humbled. There’s so many great people in that category and dear friends of mine too. But the one that I really, really would love for the team is Best Continuing Series. That’s the one that speaks to the kind of daily grind that everyone does and the fact that Nick and Frank weren’t nominated for interiors or colors means that this is the one that really, for me, points to all of the really incredible day in and day out effort that they put into this book. So it would mean a lot to get to celebrate them and to share it with them, so I hope you’ll consider us for that. Sorry I will stop pitching, I will stop lobbying for us here. But we like to act like these things don’t mean a lot, but they do, and for us personally after a year where, again, in a situation where we really we didn’t expect this much pressure, it would really mean a lot.
Anyway, I also wanted to say thank you to everybody at Vegas Comic Con, I had such a good time. So I’ve been away last week, I was in LA, out there to sign for a couple stores but also for my second youngest’s birthday. He turned 15, he’s super into sports cards and he wanted to to go to the sports card shop that he follows online. so we brought him out there. I had a couple meetings, some for DC and that stuff, some for really cool stuff we’re going to announce very very soon. But Disneyland was closed, or well, Disneyland wasn’t closed but there was a threat of a chemical leak at a plant nearby so we played it safe and did not go. And instead we went to Universal for part of the day and I was amazed at how that park is really built into the landscape. And it was so strange to go to a park that isn’t hermetically sealed off and kind of in a bubble but instead celebrates the history and the context in which it was created. So you see all of LA, you see the vista of Burbank, really, from there. You see the studios the lot you can see Warner Brothers and Disney from this incredible perch it’s really beautiful.
But then, because we didn’t go to Disneyland, I figured “you know what, I’ll bring my 15 year-old.” He’s out of school, he did well, he made honor roll. So the mission was to bring him to Vegas with me and treat him and then we’ll drive across the Mojave and go to Disneyland this weekend. So I brought him with me to Vegas. I got to hang out with Tom King, catch up with him, which was great. Incredible fans. Can’t say enough good things about fans at these cons and the excitement around this book and around DC in general. and then I took my son to an insane buffet, but we had walked a couple miles to get to the hotel, the Caesars Palace, in which it was housed. And so by that point it was totally wasted on me, I had like, a vodka and a little salad and that was it. And we went to the Hersheyland, the huge world of Hershey, watched some Forensic Files, and collapsed. And then I took him to Disneyland, which was great. But that drive across the desert, it’s one of my favorite things in the world. I love that whole area, really, from southern California all the way across to Colorado. Bigger than the four corners, that southwest area. I’ve been there, driven across it so many times, but just the majesty, the grandeur of it. It just makes you feel so small and so alone, but in a good way. It just makes all your problems seem inconsequential. And it’s humbling in that way, almost feels like religious, I don’t know. I love it.
So it was great, now I’m back. We have some incredible stuff coming up to announce on many fronts. So it’s going to be a really exciting month coming up. And I’ll be at HeroesCon in a couple weeks down in Charlotte with Nick and Che Grayson. We have Absolute Catwoman coming out next week, a week from today.
Can’t wait for you guys to see it. The work that Che and Bengal and Giovanna Niro, our colorist, did on this book is unbelievable. And Lucas Gattoni, the letterer, as well. So I hope you’ll really check it out. And again, we can’t thank you enough. Best fans in the world!
